INTRODUCTION OF THE COMPETITIONS

BOURGES INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS 2009
Electroacoustic Music and Electronic Arts

INTRODUCTION

At the beginning of the Competition in 1973, electroacoustic equipment and studios were mainly located in centers, national radios and universities. The electroacoustic experimental composers coming from the Avant-Garde were alone in using them; they worked in the fields of musical, individual or collective research; they were diffused in specialized festivals and their works were released on vinyl records.
The digital evolution of the technics has democratized their practice and consequently has multiplied kinds of music expression, types of projects, styles and ways of diffusion and consumption.
Numerous trends have been sharpened and became apparent while they generated a lot of forms of diffusion and communication. They produced a lot of creations with multiples titles but sounding experimental and electronic and frequently appealed to visual means in a multi disciplinary objective.
In the Competition IMEB has acted these ways, parallel and convergent at the same time. So it has been led to propose a grouping in two Parts: Electroacoustic Music Part and Electronic Arts Part. The 2 Parts are open in a non competitive but complementary perspective. The claimed purpose is the promotion of all forms in sound and musical experimental creation as well as diversity of the objectives and aesthetics that manifest the persistent development of arts related to instruments created in the electroacoustic and electronic, acoustic and digital, multimedia and multi technic, live and recorded domains

The partners of the Electronic Arts Part in the Bourges international competitions realized by IMEB are Art 3000 - Le Cube,  Emmetrop/Bourges, Labomedia/Orléans ,Otra/La Charité sur Loire Associations, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts of Bourges (France) as well as the Festival Zeppelin/Barcelona (Spain) and the Festival Audio Art/Kracow (Poland).

This new development of the former competitions, adding to the 3 sections of the Electroacoustic Music Part a new part devoted to the Electronic Arts is presented below and how to participate in the following columns. And then make your choice!

A) Electroacoustic Music Part

This part is devoted to assist in the creation and the promotion of electroacoustic music and the composers at the international level, the dispersion of the different fields of sound and musical creation, the valorisation of works and development of their careers.

The Section II: Trivium and Quadrivium
The objective for this section is to support work creation, to promote composers and sonic artists, to disperse their works, and to develop their career.
The Section III: Magisterium
The objective for this Section is the promotion of established entrants and the diffusion of works that might become milestones in the history of electroacoustic music development.

B) Electronic Arts Part

The purpose of this Part is to discover and promote the rich and new sound fields of practice and means of expression and technology today. It is devoted to the practice related to actual tendencies in experimental, digital and electronic arts and sound design, being different from electroacoustic music but parallel and frequently put in multi disciplinary projects.
Through these 3 categories, the objective of the Competition is to reveal and to promote remarkable works and experimental productions that have emerged from different movements and stages and of creative netarts.
